Pass: This Source Is a Navigation Page, Not a News Story

Sometimes the best editorial call is knowing when there's no story to write. Here's why this one didn't make it to publish.

Editorial Note

We don't publish this one.

The source link points to a photo gallery archive page on Pets+, a navigation element that collects past seasonal photo roundups (Mother's Day displays, Halloween windows, holiday decor). It's not a news item. There's no announcement, no product launch, no deal, no trend with numbers behind it, no operator move a retailer or brand could learn from or act on.

Why we're showing you this anyway

Because transparency matters, and because knowing what doesn't qualify as a story is as useful as knowing what does.

A headline like "Photo Gallery Archives" is a structural page on a trade publication's site. It organizes past content. It doesn't report anything new. To turn one of these galleries into a PetRetailNews piece, we'd need a specific entry inside it, say, a single retailer's Halloween window display that drove measurable foot traffic, or a Mother's Day promotion format five stores tested and can now talk about with real results.

Without that specificity, we'd be writing around a topic ("Indies do great seasonal displays!") instead of covering news. And the difference between a topic and a story is whether there's a concrete event, number, or operator decision a reader can actually use this week.

What would make this publishable

If Pets+ had linked to a single gallery entry, say, "This Store's Valentine's Anti-Event Drove 40% More Walk-Ins Than Last February", and included the store name, the tactic, and at least one number, we'd have something. Or if the archive page itself contained new research ("We surveyed 50 independent retailers about their 2024 holiday decor ROI and here's what moved"), that's a story.

A navigation page that says "here are some past photo sets" is not.

The bottom line

Not every link is a story. The best editorial discipline is knowing when to pass.
