About

The five-minute read on the business of pet retail.

PetRetailNews covers the money side of the pet industry — deals, distribution, shelf trends, policy, and store operations — for the people who actually run it: independent retailers, category buyers, brand and DTC operators, and distributors. Not the cute. The business.

What we cover

Every story files under one of five standing sections:

  • Deals & M&A Who's buying whom in pet retail — acquisitions, funding, ownership changes, and what each deal actually bought.
  • Distribution Distributors, reps, freight, trade shows, and shelf access — how product actually moves from brand to store.
  • On the Shelf Categories, velocity, and merchandising — what's moving on specialty shelves and why.
  • Policy & Recalls Recalls, regulation, and association moves — what to pull, what to say at the register, and what's changing upstream.
  • The Operator Margin, staffing, and store P&L — running the store better, week by week.

We deliberately stay out of pet-food manufacturing and formulation — other outlets own that lane. Our lane is what happens between a product existing and a customer walking out of a store with it.

How the desk works

Stories run under the desk byline, The PetRetailNews Desk — the publication speaks as "we", and the opinions in a piece are the desk's, not one person's. Every news story links the reporting, filing, or announcement it draws on, and every number we print should be traceable to a named source. If you find one that isn't, that's a correction: hello@petretailnews.com. We fix errors in the story itself, promptly.

Ask us where any figure on this site comes from and we'll tell you straight — the same standing offer we make on our partners page.

Where the money comes from

The publication is sponsor-supported. Two things keep that honest. First, paid placement never buys coverage: sponsoring the newsletter or the site gets a clearly labelled slot, not a story, and no advertiser sees editorial before you do. Second, announcements companies pay to publish on the PR Wire are labelled as the company's own words, carry a disclosure above the headline, and never appear in the newsdesk, the article feed, or our news sitemaps. If it reads like we wrote it, we wrote it.

The data

We maintain a public, verified directory of independent pet retailers9,050 stores mapped as of today — built from public business data, corrected by the stores themselves. It's the closest thing this channel has to a living census, and it's the base for the market reporting we do.

Who publishes this

PetRetailNews is a trade publication published by HomeLife Brands (HomeLife Brands, 4130 E. La Palma Ave, Anaheim, CA 92807), a company that also operates consumer pet brands. We'd rather disclose that than pretend otherwise: it's why the desk knows how this industry actually works, and it's a relationship you deserve to know about. Our standard is simple — if a story touches a brand connected to our publisher, the story says so.
