90 Years, Two Product Lines, One Bet: Why Jolly Pets Picked a Food Distributor to Push Dog Toys

VDB just added Jolly Pets to its food-first distribution network. Here's what that means for stores already ordering from them.

John A. Van Den Bosch has been moving pet food for over 90 years.

Now it's carrying Jolly Pets, the puncture-proof ball brand that's been a specialty fixture since 1994, and the partnership opens a new ordering path for stores that already work with VDB. VDB announced the partnership, adding Jolly Pets' Chase and Tug lines to a distribution network the company describes as built on premium pet products.

The decision Jolly Pets actually made

Jolly Pets didn't pick a toy specialist. It picked a food-first distributor with a 90-year customer list.

VDB will carry two categories: the Chase line (ball-style toys made with JollyFlex material, engineered not to pop under aggressive chewing) and the Tug line (knotted polyblend rope, anchored by the Tik Tak Tugzz product). The company says both are built for durability.

"Van Den Bosch remains the preferred Distributor throughout their territory, and you can feel that in how they treat their partners, both brands and retailers get real, personal attention," said Simon Power, Sales Director at Jolly Pets. "They carry everything from household names to smaller brands that share our same values around quality, and that's exactly who we want introducing Jolly Pets to more pet parents."

Jolly Pets also brought in Nobis Sales & Marketing to support VDB's sales team. That's not decoration, it's the tell that this partnership is built for ongoing support, not just a one-time placement.

What this actually changes on your end

If VDB is your primary distributor, you now have the option to order Jolly Pets through them.

The question: does adding Jolly Pets to your VDB order make sense, or does your current toy distributor's pricing and service still hold? Run the numbers on your current toy distributor's Jolly Pets pricing against whatever VDB quotes before you change anything.

For buyers at multi-location operations, the other question: does VDB's distribution footprint actually cover your stores, or would this create a new logistics problem instead of solving one?

The misread most people will make

This is not a feel-good story about a legacy distributor adding a beloved brand.

This is VDB expanding beyond its core, and a durable toy brand choosing a food-focused distributor's reach. The partnership assumes that stores value the option to order toys through their existing food distributor.

If that's true, toy specialists who built their value on assortment depth face a tougher pitch when a store can order a known brand through a house they already work with.

Our read: watch who else follows

VDB adding Jolly Pets is worth watching because it tests whether specialty toy brands see value in food-distributor reach.

Jolly Pets is betting that VDB's existing customer relationships and "personal attention" (Power's words) matter as much as specialized toy curation. That's a different distribution strategy than most toy brands have run.

For toy-specialized distributors, the question becomes: what do you carry or offer that a food house adding toys can't match? If the answer is only assortment, and the food house now stocks a brand your customers already reorder, you need a different edge.

For store owners, this is the moment to look at who you're ordering from and why. If your primary distributor now carries a toy line you were ordering elsewhere, the question is whether their pricing and terms make switching worth it. That answer is in the invoice, not the announcement.

Jolly Pets products are available now through VDB's July and August sales flyers.
