A customer stands at your counter holding a puppy and asks which pet insurance you recommend.

U.S. News just made that question more urgent

U.S. News & World Report announced winners of the 2026-2027 Pet Insurance Awards this week, recognizing five companies after analyzing 11,424 data points and surveying more than 800 policyholders. Lemonade took Best Overall. Pumpkin won Best for Customer Satisfaction. Pets Best earned Best for Seamless Claims. MetLife got Best for Deductible Options with more than 20 choices including a $0 option. Spot landed Best for Older Pets since it doesn't turn away senior animals based on age.

The awards come as pet owners increasingly seek high-quality care and veterinary costs continue rising alongside expanding treatment options, according to U.S. News. The organization has evaluated pet insurance companies since 2021, weighing customer satisfaction, coverage options, service features, and cost.

You answer the question. You probably give a thoughtful answer. You earn nothing.

The margin you're leaving on the counter

The conversation that builds trust produces zero revenue if you don't have a way to capture it. The customer leaves to buy the policy online. You helped them decide, someone else captured the transaction.

The awards create fresh consumer urgency around a decision retailers are already the front line for. U.S. News' Kayla Randolph said the rankings help consumers identify "which insurers consistently deliver in key areas - from seamless claims processing and flexible deductible structures to customer satisfaction and availability to older pets." That's exactly the kind of guidance a store owner gives during a ten-minute counter conversation, translated into a clickable list the customer can act on without coming back.

What to do given both

You're not going to out-rank U.S. News on insurance advice, and chasing affiliate revenue from multiple carriers is probably more admin than it's worth for a single-location store. The play is to use the insurance question as the entry point for a higher-margin product conversation you DO control.

When a customer asks about insurance, answer the question honestly, then pivot: "If you're thinking about insurance, you should also stock a joint supplement now, it's cheaper than the claim you'll file in three years." The insurance question is a signal the customer is thinking about long-term health costs. That's your opening to move them into wellness SKUs that lift your basket today.

Track how many of these conversations convert into a supplement, premium food, or dental product add-on. Give it 60 days. If the tactic isn't moving product, test a different pivot line.

The consequence: you're the advisor, not the closer

The insurance market is growing around independent retail without cutting you in. U.S. News evaluated 20 companies and surveyed more than 800 policyholders to build these rankings. The awards will drive consumer decisions. Your leverage is the ten minutes before they leave to buy the policy, use it to sell something you actually stock, or keep answering the question for free.
