BetterBone reduced pricing by nearly 20% while rolling out redesigned packaging, expanded merchandising tools, and a centralized retailer portal following feedback from distributors and retailers at SuperZoo, according to a company announcement.

The price reduction came alongside what the company called increased scale and operational efficiencies, though BetterBone did not disclose current pricing, volume thresholds, or the timing of when the new pricing took effect. The company also did not specify whether the reduction applied to all SKUs or a subset of the line.

What the pricing move signals about distribution strategy

A nearly 20% price cut on a premium plant-based chew line suggests the company is prioritizing volume and shelf penetration over margin protection. That is the move a brand makes when it believes broader distribution will deliver more total margin dollars than holding a higher per-unit price on narrower placement.

The company launched the new packaging, visual identity, website, and retailer portal in August and showcased the refresh at SuperZoo. Chisholm Weaver, CEO and co-founder, said the company's philosophy was simple: "You asked. We listened." The company did not disclose what specific feedback drove the pricing decision or which other changes came directly from retailer input versus internal planning.

The retailer portal and what it contains

BetterBone's new retailer and distributor portal gives partners access to product information, sales resources, merchandising materials, logos, photography, digital content, and educational tools in one location, according to the announcement. The company said it will continue adding resources based on partner feedback but did not specify whether the portal requires a login, whether it is gated by account status, or how frequently it updates.

For a store deciding whether to bring in a new brand or expand an existing one, a functional partner portal answers whether you will have to chase the rep for updated sell sheets, POS materials, and product photography every time you need them, or whether you can pull them yourself. A portal that works saves time. One that requires three emails to get login credentials does not.

The company also introduced what it called enhanced merchandising and promotional materials and new education tools, but the announcement did not detail what those materials are, whether they ship automatically with orders, or whether stores need to request them separately.

The packaging redesign and the shelf communication problem it addresses

BetterBone's updated packaging is designed to help pet parents identify the right product based on dog size, chewing density, flavor, and intended use, according to the company. Sarah Morrow, head of brand marketing, said the rebrand was about making the brand "finally reflect the same level of innovation, quality, and care that's always gone into every product we make."

The company framed the packaging change as making sustainability "easier to understand, more accessible and a whole lot more fun," but did not provide before-and-after images, specify which elements of the pack design changed, or explain how the new design differentiates between SKUs on a crowded shelf.

For a buyer, the test is whether a customer standing in the aisle can pick the right BetterBone SKU without reading the back panel. If the new packaging solves that, it earns its shelf space. If it does not, the rebrand is a brand exercise that does not move product.

What the announcement does not show

BetterBone said it is expanding its retail, distribution, and international footprint and has added European manufacturing capabilities, but the company did not disclose current door count, distribution partner names, which international markets it entered, or what share of production now runs through European facilities versus U.S. ones.

The company also said it added talent across sales, marketing, social and community engagement, operations, and other functions, but did not specify headcount, how many roles it added, or whether the hires were full-time employees or contractors.

Weaver said the company is growing "the people, tools and infrastructure" to support expansion and wants to "grow with our partners, not simply grow around them," but the announcement offered no metrics on what that growth looks like in door count, velocity, or reorder rates.

The company also introduced BetterBone GO, a new plant-based product designed for tossing, training, and interactive play, but did not disclose SKU count, pricing, launch timing, or which retailers will carry it first.

What a store deciding whether to expand the line should watch

If you already stock BetterBone, the portal and the price reduction are the two things that change Monday. Log in to the portal and see whether the merchandising materials are there and whether they are current. If they are, that is a brand investing in the tools you need to move the SKU. If the portal is empty or the materials are outdated, the announcement is ahead of the execution.

On pricing, confirm whether the nearly 20% reduction applies to the SKUs you carry and whether your cost dropped or only the suggested retail. A price cut that lands on the retailer's margin is not a partnership move.

If you are considering bringing BetterBone in for the first time, the pricing reduction makes the line more accessible, but the announcement does not give you enough to model whether the brand will perform on your shelf. Ask the rep for velocity data from comparable stores, reorder rates, and what the portal contains before you commit the space. A rebrand and a price cut are inputs, not proof of sell-through.
