BetterBone Just Built a Fetch Toy That Floats and Chews Like a Premium SKU
The company's betting one SKU can replace two. The float feature is the tell, and the fall launch gives you time to watch returns.
You're walking SuperZoo's New Product Showcase and you stop at Booth #3100 because the bone-shaped thing in the demo bin is floating in water.
What BetterBone actually launched
BetterBone GO is the company's first product designed explicitly for active play, tossing, training, water retrieval, rather than static chewing. It's built from the same plant-based Vernovo material the brand uses in its core chew line, but shaped and weighted for fetch. The company says it floats, wears down into soft flakes instead of sharp fragments, and comes in three sizes (Mini, Small, Large) and three densities (Light, Moderate, Hard) to match chewing styles from puppies to power chewers.
MSRPs run $7.99 to $15.99. Fall 2026 availability. The product will be in SuperZoo's New Product Showcase and at the company's booth.
The category gap BetterBone is betting exists
BetterBone is positioning GO as the product that does both: survives fetch AND satisfies the chew instinct, which would let you stock one SKU where you currently need two.
The company frames it as a safer alternative to nylon and rawhide for dogs who are "constantly on the move." CEO and Co-Founder Chisholm Weaver said GO "gives them a healthier, more sustainable chew that's just as fun during a game of fetch as it is during quiet time at home."
BetterBone products are in over 4,000 retail locations in more than 30 countries, so the distribution base exists. The question is whether GO's durability claim holds up under actual fetch conditions, because if it doesn't, you're looking at a returns problem in a category that already has thin margins.
Where this lands on the shelf
If GO performs as pitched, it creates a merchandising decision: do you shelve it with fetch toys or with premium chews?
The dual-density and multi-size approach suggests BetterBone expects you to treat it like a chew line, full facings, life-stage segmentation, rather than a toy impulse buy. That's more SKUs than a typical fetch toy gets, but potentially higher velocity if the play angle works.
The float feature is the tell. BetterBone is explicitly targeting the park, the beach, the trail, contexts where the product needs to perform differently than a static chew. If that use case is real, the margin lift comes from capturing a customer who currently buys both categories separately.
The risk if the durability claim doesn't hold
BetterBone's core line is splinter-resistant and designed to wear down slowly. GO uses the same material, but fetch introduces forces static chewing doesn't, impact, water exposure, retrieval repetition.
If GO shreds faster than a static chew, you're stuck with a fetch toy at the high end of the MSRP range that doesn't deliver on the durability promise, and the customer who trusted your recommendation doesn't come back for the next SKU you pitch. The fall launch gives you a few months to watch early sell-through and return rates before committing deep inventory for holiday.
The upside: if it works, you've got a hybrid product that pulls chew margins in a category that usually can't support them, and BetterBone's existing specialty-first distribution strategy suggests they're pricing for independent retail, not racing to mass.
