INABA Launched Complete Wet Food at Target Before Specialty. The Distribution Order Tells You What Changed.
The mass retailer got the brick-and-mortar debut for Churu's first complete wet food. The launch order is the story.
INABA Foods USA debuted Churu Complete 3-oz Cans at Target stores, making a mass retailer the brick-and-mortar launch partner for its first complete and balanced wet cat food.
Six SKUs are live now at select Target locations, two textures (savory gravy and light creamy mousse), three variety packs (Chicken Recipe, Chicken Recipe with Salmon, Chicken Recipe with Cheese). The company said the cans bring its focus on flavor, hydration, and product innovation to a complete mealtime format, extending the Churu brand beyond treats.
Target bought the category expansion before specialty saw it
INABA calls the Target launch a "first-to-market collaboration" and frames it as a way to reach pet parents through a convenient shopping destination while building momentum for continued expansion. The company's Director of Sales, Stephanie Lundell, said Target is an ideal partner for the in-store debut because it makes it easier for cat parents to discover a complete mealtime option.
What the release does NOT say: whether specialty buyers were offered the line before Target, whether independents will get the same SKUs or different ones, or what the timing looks like for specialty availability. The line exists, it's at Target, and the rest is described as a national rollout in progress.
The launch sequence is the signal. INABA chose a mass retailer as the brick-and-mortar debut partner for a new category, and that changes the trust calculus for buyers deciding whether to commit wet-food shelf space to the brand.
Our read: the distribution order is the story, not the SKU count
We're not surprised INABA expanded into complete wet food, the treat franchise was always going to test adjacent categories. What's notable is that Target got the brick-and-mortar debut.
The risk for specialty buyers is reading this launch as a signal about how future category expansions will roll out. The risk for specialty stores is that customers see Churu Complete Cans at Target, assume the line is widely available, and ask about it, before the store had a chance to evaluate it or before it's even available to them.
The opportunity, if you're a specialty buyer, is to watch the Target test closely. If the line moves, you'll know before INABA's rep calls. If it sits, you saved the shelf space. Either way, you're not the one funding the market test this time.

What changes on the shelf Monday
If you stock Churu treats and you're evaluating wet food lines, you now have a data point: INABA chose Target as the brick-and-mortar launch partner for its complete food line. That doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't stock it when it becomes available to you, but it does mean you should price and promote it with the assumption that your customer can get it at Target, because they can.
If you're a brand operator watching this, the lesson is that a brand can choose a mass retailer as the brick-and-mortar debut partner for a category expansion without advance notice to other channels. That's neither good nor bad, it's a choice with tradeoffs. INABA bought scale and convenience placement. Whether that trade works depends entirely on whether Complete Cans move at the velocity Target's shelf space requires.
Watch what happens next. If the cans turn, INABA validated the mass-first launch strategy and specialty becomes a fill-in channel. If they sit, the company will need specialty to carry the line while it figures out the mass positioning. Either way, the distribution choice is the part worth remembering when the next line extension pitch arrives.
