IndiePet appointed Bill Greene as its new executive director, effective October 19, 2026.

Greene spent the last 14 years as general manager of Reber Ranch, a large-format pet retailer where he oversaw the launch and operation of a veterinary hospital and grooming business. Before that, he spent 13 years in regional sales leadership for a pet-product manufacturer, working with independent retailers and distributors. He served four years on IndiePet's board and held the secretary/treasurer role before the appointment.

What Greene's background brings to the role

Greene's years on the supplier side and his experience running a large retail operation with veterinary and grooming services give him a perspective that spans manufacturing, distribution, and multi-service retail. The announcement does not say whether IndiePet will use that background to renegotiate supplier terms, push members toward adding services, or maintain its current approach.

Greene said he will focus on listening to members, working with the board and industry partners, and bringing "value and meaningful support" so independent retailers can compete. Al Puntillo, a board member, said Greene "understands our members because he has spent his career working alongside them."

What Greene said he will focus on

Greene said he will "work closely with the board, retail members and industry partners to strengthen the value IndiePet provides, expand the association's reach and help independent pet retailers remain competitive and successful in a changing marketplace." He named three priorities: listening to members, deepening engagement across the retail community, and building stronger connections throughout the industry.

The statement does not name a specific initiative, a category focus, or a distributor relationship IndiePet will renegotiate under his leadership. It also does not say whether Greene will push members to add services the way Reber Ranch did or whether he will use his manufacturer background to secure exclusive SKUs or better cost structures.

IndiePet represents approximately 8,000 independent and neighborhood pet retail locations in North America, according to the announcement. The organization recognized former executive director Todd Dittman for his leadership and contributions.

Our read: the board picked the person who already knows the organization

Greene's four years on the board mean he already knows how IndiePet operates and what members have asked for. That continuity matters more than his resume.

The manufacturing background is the variable. A buying-group leader who has spent years in supplier sales brings a different perspective to negotiations than someone who has only run stores. That could mean IndiePet secures better terms for members without asking them to operate differently. Or it could mean Greene pushes members toward the large-format model he ran at Reber Ranch, adding veterinary services, grooming, and other revenue streams to compete with chains on breadth rather than curation.

We'd watch whether IndiePet announces a new distributor partnership, a private-label program, or a services playbook in Greene's first six months. Any of those would tell you which direction the board hired him to take.

What to do if you're an IndiePet member or a brand selling through the group

If you're an IndiePet member: Ask your rep or the board what Greene's first 90 days will focus on. If the answer is "listening," that's real and you should tell him what you need. If the answer is "we're launching X," that's the strategy the board already decided and Greene is the person they hired to execute it. Either way, you'll know whether to expect a new ask or a better deal.

If you're a brand or distributor selling to IndiePet members: Greene spent years in regional sales for a manufacturer, working with independent retailers and distributors. If you're pitching IndiePet on an exclusive or a program, bring the real numbers and the real terms.
