Jollyes opened its first store inside an Asda supermarket in Sheffield
The 2,700-square-foot location is the first time the UK chain has opened inside a grocer rather than taking a standalone site.
Jollyes opened a 2,700-square-foot pet store inside an Asda supermarket in Sheffield, the first time the UK chain has embedded a location within a grocer's four walls rather than taking a standalone site.
What pet retailers near Asda locations are asking
Pet retailers within a few miles of an Asda are asking whether this is a one-off or a format test that scales across Asda's UK store base. If the economics work, the grocer's footprint becomes expansion inventory without the site-selection risk of a standalone lease. The company now runs 128 UK outlets and has two more openings scheduled: Mansfield on October 16 and Dunfermline on November 5.
Jollyes has not said what success looks like, what the revenue-share or rent structure is with Asda, or whether Asda is piloting the format with other pet operators in parallel. Store-within-store deals in grocery typically hinge on incremental basket lift for the host retailer, not just the tenant's sales per square foot, and we don't know what Asda is measuring.
The assortment tilt and why it matters
The Sheffield store stocks what Jollyes called "an extensive selection of raw food, natural treats and fresh food," alongside toys, treats, and accessories. The assortment is deliberate positioning against Asda's own pet aisle, which runs the same mass-market dry kibble and canned lines every UK grocer carries. Jollyes is using the format to sell the categories Asda does not stock deeply, not to duplicate what is already on the grocery shelf three aisles over.
If the goal is to justify the square footage to Asda's real estate team, this is the right play. A store-within-store that competes directly with the host's existing category is a margin problem for both parties. One that brings new customers into the building or converts a grocery trip into a higher-value basket is a landlord win, and Jollyes gets access to traffic it would never pull to a standalone location.
What this creates for independents near Asda locations
If Asda rolls the format out, independents near those stores face a different competitive picture than they do against a standalone Jollyes or a Pets at Home. The customer is already shopping at Asda for groceries, and adding a 2,700-square-foot specialty pet section inside that trip compresses the decision. The customer can buy premium food, natural treats, and toys without getting back in the car. A standalone cannot match the convenience advantage, and the format runs on Asda's parking lot and hours, not Jollyes'.
Store-within-store formats typically carry a narrower assortment than a full standalone because the square footage is fixed and the rent structure does not justify deep inventory in slow-turn SKUs. If Jollyes is emphasizing raw and natural, it is probably not stocking the breadth an independent carries in those same categories, and it is not carrying the service layer.
Our read and what the Sheffield test does not tell you
We're watching the next two Jollyes openings. If Mansfield or Dunfermline also sit inside a grocer, the format is the strategy. If both are standalone, Sheffield is a pilot and Jollyes is waiting on the data before committing capital to the model.
The test does not tell you whether Asda is running the same pilot with other pet operators, and whether the format works outside a large-format superstore. Asda's smaller Express locations do not have 2,700 square feet to give a tenant, and the traffic pattern in a convenience store is the opposite of the dwell time a pet shop needs. If the model only works in Asda's largest boxes, the addressable footprint shrinks and the expansion picture changes.
We also do not know what Jollyes is paying. Store-within-store rent can run as a percentage of sales, a fixed rate per square foot, or a hybrid with a marketing contribution to the host retailer. The structure determines whether the format is margin-accretive for Jollyes or a customer-acquisition play that breaks even on paper. A brand weighing whether to pitch Jollyes for distribution should ask what the in-store economics are before assuming the chain is opening doors at the same velocity as its standalone rollout.
What changes for a brand in the raw or natural category
If a raw food or natural treat brand is trying to land UK grocery distribution, Jollyes' emphasis on those categories inside Asda creates a side door. The brand is not pitching Asda's central buyer, who controls what sits in the grocer's own pet aisle and who moves slowly on emerging categories. The brand is pitching Jollyes, which runs its own buy and is using the format to differentiate on the categories the brand is in.
The brand is still one layer removed from the grocery customer. Jollyes controls the assortment, the pricing, and the merchandising inside its 2,700 square feet. If the brand does not move, Jollyes pulls it, and the brand has no relationship with Asda to fall back on. It is distribution into grocery traffic, but it is not grocery distribution.
