You're deciding whether to give a brand shelf space, and the rep just told you they're spending differently this cycle.

What Nulo actually just committed to

Nulo launched the Nulo Summer Games presented by Petco, a nationwide contest running through August 26 that asks pet parents to post photos or videos of their pets in action on Instagram for a chance to win what the company calls a "pet athlete endorsement contract." The contest awards six winners, three dogs, three cats, with Gold, Silver, or Bronze Medalist status. Gold Medalists get featured in a national Nulo ad campaign, a one-year supply of product, custom trading pins, their pet on a custom kibble bag, and what the company describes as a "signing day announcement moment." Silver and Bronze winners receive six-month and one-month product supplies respectively, plus Team Nulo merch.

The judging panel includes three Team Nulo human athlete ambassadors: Ryan Crouser (three-time Olympic gold medalist in shot put), Regan Smith, and Jessica Long. Entries get evaluated on demonstration of talent, entertainment value, and submission quality. Petco is co-presenting and supporting the contest with in-store displays at what the company describes as "thousands of Petco locations nationwide," plus a 20% discount on purchases of $26 or more of Nulo products during the contest period.

The play Nulo is actually running

Nulo is manufacturing influencer assets instead of buying them. The company gets user-generated content, winner announcement moments, and a library of pet athlete stories it can run in ads for the cost of product, some merch, and the contest mechanics.

The timing matters. If this builds an owned content library Nulo can deploy through fall, it's smart. If it cedes selling weeks to competitors who ARE funding in-store activation, it's expensive.

Petco's co-presenting role is the tell. The in-store display support at thousands of locations suggests this is more than a logo licensing deal, Petco is committing physical retail space to the program.

What changes if you stock Nulo or you're deciding whether to

Watch velocity at Petco locations near you during the contest window. If user-generated content drives measurable trial, the brand just proved it can justify your shelf space on consumer pull instead of the standard promotional calendar. That gives Nulo negotiating leverage when your contract comes up, and it gives YOU a data point on whether social contest mechanics actually convert browsers to buyers in this category.

If velocity doesn't move, Nulo just spent its budget on Instagram engagement instead of moving product through your store. That's the moment to renegotiate terms or reallocate the space to a brand that will fund differently.

The failure mode: Nulo generates social impressions, builds a content library, and sees no change in sell-through at store level. The brand gets marketing assets. You get a SKU that didn't move during a discount window. The cost to you is the opportunity cost of the shelf space and the margin you didn't capture from a brand willing to spend differently.

If you're a brand operator with thin trade dollars, here's what this tests

Nulo is in more than 6,500 pet specialty retailers nationwide, according to the company. It has the distribution to make a consumer-facing contest legible, the entrants can actually go buy the product at a store near them, which closes the loop from Instagram post to purchase. If you're an emerging brand fighting for independent shelves, you don't have that coverage yet, so a national contest sends entrants to retailers who don't stock you. The mechanic only works if you've already won enough doors that the contest can drive traffic TO those doors.

The smaller-scale version: a regional contest tied to the stores that DO stock you, with prizes that cost you product and time instead of media budget. If Nulo's version drives measurable lift, you have a case study. If it doesn't, you just saved the budget.

The thing to watch over the next 90 days: whether Nulo's owned channels and the winner announcement moments generate enough reach to move the needle on trial, or whether this becomes a content play that lives in the brand's Instagram grid but doesn't change what a buyer sees in their reorder data.

The trade-off before you say yes to the next one

If this works, expect more brands to ask you to run in-store tie-ins to their consumer contests instead of funding your usual promotional calendar. The pitch will be: we're driving foot traffic and awareness, you capture the sale. The question you ask: what does your velocity data show during the last contest window, and what are you offering me if it doesn't move?

A brand spending on consumer pull instead of trade spend isn't wrong. It's a different bet. Your job is to know which bet pays your rent.
