ökocat reopened nominations for its annual ökocause4paws program, which gives litter donations to small cat rescues and shelters. Since launching in 2018, the program has donated more than 63,000 pounds of natural litter to over 35 shelters across the U.S. and Canada and supported more than 9,000 cat adoptions, according to the company.

Nominations are open through Sept. 30 at healthy-pet.com/pages/okocause4paws, and winning shelters will be announced in late 2026. Selected shelters receive litter donations, and anyone who adopts a cat from a winning shelter receives a coupon for a complimentary bag of ökocat litter. Everyone who submits a nomination is entered to win a one-year supply of the litter.

The small-rescue focus and what it funds

The program targets smaller rescues that may have fewer resources than larger shelters, according to ökocat. That focus gives the brand a local footprint in markets where a regional rescue has more word-of-mouth credibility than a national litter brand does on its own.

The 9,000 adoptions the company reports and the 35 shelters it has worked with since 2018 compound over time into a track record the brand can cite when pitching retailers on natural litter shelf space. A cause program that has run since 2018 reads as committed rather than opportunistic, and that distinction matters when a buyer is deciding whether to give a premium SKU an endcap during kitten season.

What the announcement does not show

ökocat did not disclose the total dollar value of the litter donations, the criteria it uses to select winning shelters, or how many nominations it typically receives. The company also did not say whether it tracks post-adoption purchase behavior, such as whether the coupon recipients who adopt a cat from a winning shelter convert to repeat buyers, and at what rate.

Without that conversion data, the program's retail value is harder to quantify. A shelter partnership that drives first-time buyers into a store is useful, but a partnership that converts those buyers into repeat purchasers is a different conversation with the buyer.

The co-marketing angle for stores that stock the line

If you stock ökocat and a local rescue in your market wins the grant, you have a co-marketing opportunity. Host an adoption event, stock the brand prominently, and let the rescue do the community outreach. The brand supplies the litter and the coupons, the rescue supplies the adopters, and you supply the location and the follow-on consumables sale.

The timing matters. Nominations close Sept. 30, winners are announced in late 2026. If you are planning an adoption event around the program, consider your own seasonal traffic patterns and when adoption activity peaks in your market.

A program that has run since 2018

The program's track record since 2018 gives ökocat a credibility advantage when a buyer is evaluating premium litter lines. A buyer can point to the ökocause4paws program as a tiebreaker when two brands hit the same price point and margin.

We would watch whether ökocat expands the program with more shelters, larger donations, or disclosed conversion data.

The adoption metric is a useful number to have when a customer asks why natural litter costs more than clay. Saying this brand has helped place 9,000 cats since 2018 is a concrete answer that justifies the premium in a way that saying it is eco-friendly does not. Whether that answer drives enough incremental sales to offset the margin gap is something every store stocking the category has to work out for itself.
