Pet Age opened nominations for its 2027 Retailer Excellence Awards, which close January 31
The program recognizes independent stores across seven categories, plus manufacturer, distributor, and sales rep of the year.
Pet Age opened nominations in December for its 2027 Retailer Excellence Awards, the trade publication's second annual program recognizing independent pet retailers. Nominations close January 31, 2027.
Store owners are asking whether entering an industry award program is worth the time it takes to fill out the form and gather photos. The plain answer: it depends on what you plan to do with the recognition if you win, and whether you have the material to make a strong entry without inventing it.
The seven categories and what each one asks for
The program recognizes independent retailers in seven areas. Social Media Outreach and Online Initiatives covers digital campaigns, new websites, and email or social promotions that drove business. Store Design/Redesign recognizes relocations, refreshes, expansions, or service additions like grooming. Visual Merchandising honors standout displays and in-store presentations. Pet Age requires high-resolution images and says entries should demonstrate merchandising creativity rather than showing a small product grouping.
Store Events covers successful in-store events or event series from the past year. Best Specialty Store recognizes a distinctive niche and customer experience. Multiple Locations celebrates retailers operating across more than one store. Socially Responsible honors retailers supporting local shelters, hosting fundraising events, prioritizing sustainable products, or leading other initiatives that give back to their communities.
Pet Age will also name a Manufacturer of the Year, Distributor of the Year, and Sales Representatives of the Year. Vendors, sales reps, and other industry professionals can nominate retailers. Nominators need to provide details and photos to support the submission.
Retailers can submit their own entries for as many categories as they choose, filling out a separate form for each. Each entry requires at least one image, with a store photo preferred.
The timeline and what happens after the deadline
Nominations opened on the Pet Age website in December and close January 31. Beginning February 1, Pet Age will review nominations and identify the top five finalists in each category. Retailers will then vote for their favorites among the finalists. Pet Age will announce winners in its May edition.
The program launched in early 2026. According to Pet Age, the inaugural awards aimed to highlight the obstacles and achievements of physical retail stores while recognizing how manufacturers, distributors, and retailers depend on each other.
Our read: the value sits in what you do with the win, not the plaque
An award win or finalist placement gives a store owner three things: local PR (the kind that gets picked up by a community paper or mentioned in a Chamber newsletter), staff morale (recognition from outside the building that the work matters), and a third-party credibility marker that can be useful in vendor negotiations or co-marketing pitches. A brand deciding where to place a new product launch or a distributor deciding which accounts get early allocation will sometimes weight toward stores that have demonstrated operational excellence in a public way.
The caveat: the value depends entirely on whether you use it. A plaque on the wall does nothing. A press release to the local paper, a social post thanking your team, and a line in your pitch deck to a brand you want to carry, those turn the recognition into leverage. If you don't have a plan for what you'd do with the win, the time cost of the entry probably outweighs the benefit.
The other consideration: most of these categories ask you to explain what you did and why it worked, which means you need the material to make a real case. If you ran a standout event series, launched a digital campaign that moved product, or redesigned your store in a way that changed traffic, you have a story to tell. If you're reaching to make something sound bigger than it was, the entry reads thin and the time would be better spent on the next quarter's plan.

For stores that do have the material and the plan, the deadline is January 31. Retailers can enter at the Pet Age website, and vendors and reps can nominate accounts they think deserve recognition. The finalists get announced in February, retailers vote through the spring, and winners are named in May.
