Tear stain products live on Amazon because that's where the buyer already decided to solve the problem before walking into your store.

Phillips just made a different bet

Phillips Pet Food & Supplies announced a distribution partnership with Angels' Eyes, the top-selling brand in tear stain care. Angels' Eyes products, tear stain chews, powders, wipes, topical solutions, plus calming and joint support, are now available through all 10 Phillips distribution centers nationwide. Retailers can add the brand to their existing Phillips orders with no new vendor setup, no separate freight, no minimums beyond their standard terms.

The move puts a category into the hands of thousands of stores that could now carry it if they wanted to. The question Phillips is answering: does a product with strong online recognition actually convert when a store owner explains it face-to-face?

What Angels' Eyes built (and where it built it)

Angels' Eyes specialized in tear stain support for nearly two decades and grew it into the top-selling brand in the category. The portfolio is made without wheat, corn, or artificial colors, and carries the National Animal Supplement Council quality seal, the kind of clean-label positioning that works in specialty if the customer is standing in front of you asking questions. The brand has since expanded beyond eye care into calming, joint support, and grooming solutions.

None of that changes the fact that the brand built its recognition in channels where discovery and repeat purchase happen differently than they do in a store.

The pattern this continues

Phillips has been adding established, high-demand brands to its assortment and making them simple for retailers to order, receive, and sell. Jessica Morris, Chief Commercial Officer at Phillips, said health and wellness continues to be one of the strongest growth categories in independent pet retail, and that Angels' Eyes brings category-leading recognition and a proven product line customers already ask for by name.

That last part, "ask for by name", is the whole bet. If customers are asking for Angels' Eyes in-store and the store doesn't stock it, then Phillips just solved a margin leak. If the demand isn't there at the counter, then this becomes shelf space a store owner eventually clears to make room for something that actually turns.

What would prove Phillips right

The distributor made Angels' Eyes frictionless to try. A store can add a few SKUs to next week's order, no new account, no freight minimum. If the category converts, if the margin and velocity justify the slot, then expect every supplement brand with strong name recognition to pitch Phillips and the other distributors on the same playbook. If it doesn't, the SKUs quietly disappear from reorders and the category stays where it's been.

The tell will be whether stores that stock it actually reorder it, or whether the first order sits. When tear stain products move, they justify the slot. When they don't, they're expensive shelf space you could have used for something a customer didn't already solve before walking in.

What to watch next

Store owners testing this are writing their own playbook. If you stock it, track turn rate against the slot it's taking. If it moves, you just added a category your competitors may have skipped. If it doesn't, you learned something about where this category actually converts.

The thing that would prove this works: a store owner who stocks Angels' Eyes and actually moves enough volume that the brand becomes a reason someone picks that store over the one next door. That's the outcome Phillips is betting on. The data will tell us whether it holds.
