The Honest Kitchen added a fish recipe to its Whole Food Clusters dry food line, extending the human-grade platform with a new protein option. The new SKU uses wild-caught salmon and whitefish, goes live October 1 at Petco, PetSmart, and independent pet retailers nationwide, and is already available on the brand's own site.

The chicken-free angle and the protein rotation play

The recipe is 100% chicken-free, which matters for two reasons: it gives stores a poultry-free option in the human-grade dry segment, and it lets buyers pitch protein rotation without leaving the Clusters format. The Honest Kitchen is framing it as a straightforward alternative for pet parents rotating proteins or feeding dogs with poultry sensitivities, not a premium step-up, just a lateral move within the same line.

The ingredient deck includes carrots, kelp, pumpkin, cranberries, turmeric, blueberries, flaxseed, coconut oil, and fish oil. The company said the recipe provides omega-3 fatty acids for skin and coat support. It is made without corn, wheat, soy, artificial flavors, or preservatives, and comes in both grain-free and whole-grain versions.

Miki Dosen, the brand's Chief Marketing Officer, said pet parents shouldn't have to compromise when looking for an alternative protein, and that the new SKU puts real salmon and whitefish at the front of the recipe with no chicken or meat meals.

The Clusters format and where this SKU sits

Clusters are cold-pressed, bite-sized pieces made with what The Honest Kitchen calls its MadeHonest Process: human-grade whole food ingredients pressed into clusters, then roasted and gently dehydrated. The format is designed to be served three ways, as a complete meal, a crunchy topper, or a training treat, with no prep required.

The fish SKU is an incremental add to an existing platform, not a new format or a category shift. For a buyer, the decision is whether the fish recipe earns its facing in a Clusters block that already carries other proteins, or whether you consolidate to the top movers and skip the line extension. That depends on how much protein-rotation demand you are seeing at the register versus how much shelf space The Honest Kitchen already occupies.

Our read on the human-grade dry segment and the fish wedge

The human-grade dry segment gives a brand room to charge a premium and defend it on ingredient sourcing. Fish recipes in premium dry are less common than poultry or beef, which gives The Honest Kitchen a cleaner lane if the customer is already committed to human-grade and wants to rotate off chicken.

The risk is that the SKU may end up as a planogram placeholder that moves slowly rather than a velocity driver. If you stock Clusters and the fish SKU sits without turning at the rate of other proteins in the line, it is probably taking space from a faster-moving SKU in the same line or a different brand altogether.

The October 1 launch date puts the SKU on shelf ahead of the holiday quarter, which is the right timing if the goal is to capture gift buyers and trial purchases. If it moves slower than other SKUs in the line after a few months, we'd watch whether it earns the facing or whether you consolidate.

What changes on the shelf this quarter

If you already stock The Honest Kitchen's Clusters line, the fish SKU is a planogram decision, not a door-opener. You give it a facing or you hold the block at its current protein count and wait to see if customers ask for it. If you are being pitched Clusters for the first time, the fish recipe gives you another option to test, but it does not change the fundamental question about the human-grade dry format or the brand's velocity in your market.

For brands competing in the premium dry segment, this is one more SKU in a category where The Honest Kitchen is filling out an existing line, not opening a new front.
