A brand rep walks in with a category review deck and you're wondering where the numbers came from and whether you're seeing the same data they are.
The plain answer: probably not anymore, and that gap just got more expensive to close
World Pet Association announced petLENS, a new market intelligence initiative developed in partnership with BSM Partners. The first report, petLENS Pulse, launches in September and gives the pet industry ongoing access to consumer research, category insights, and trend analysis.
petLENS Pulse is a monthly index report. petLENS Spotlight provides deeper quarterly studies on specific product categories. The source does not disclose pricing or subscription structure.
The research is built on continuous tracking and surveying of more than 75,000 pet owners, paired with interpretation from a team of data scientists, researchers, veterinarians, and product scientists. It spans dogs and cats as well as birds, reptiles, small mammals, and aquatic pets.
"The pet industry doesn't lack expertise. It lacks the ability to see around corners," said Mike Karsting, Senior Vice President, World Pet Association. "Retailers, brands, distributors, every part of this industry is making decisions today based on where the market was months ago, not where it's actually headed. petLENS gives this industry that forecasting ability year-round."
The caveat: if your brand partners subscribe and you don't, you're negotiating with half the picture
The program is designed to help retailers, brands, and distributors spot trends, flag risks, and guide action, adjusting an order, resetting a shelf, catching a shift before it shows up in sales. petLENS Pulse is structured around five core pillars: Sentiment and Ownership, Spending and Shopping Behavior, Category and Product, Discovery and Loyalty, and Health and Wellness.
"Most research in this industry is a snapshot: a survey at one point, a sales report at another," said Michael Johnson, Principal, Marketing, Insights and Innovation, BSM Partners. "petLENS never stops measuring because the consumer never stops evolving."
That continuous measurement is the value proposition. It's also the leverage problem. When a brand operator and an independent retailer both subscribe to the same data service, the negotiation doesn't get more fair, it gets faster for whoever interprets the report first. And the party with a dedicated insights team usually isn't the single-location store.
