You're walking your wet food aisle, and Now Fresh holds shelf space in kibble.

Petcurean just put a format decision in front of you

Petcurean launched Now Fresh Good Gravy Wet Food exclusively across Pet Valu's Canadian store family, Pet Valu, Bosley's by Pet Valu, Paulmac's, Total Pet, and Tisol, through December 31, 2026. Eight recipes total: four for dogs, four for cats. Beef or chicken bone broth gravies, fresh deboned proteins, cooked once, no by-product meals. The company says the line extends the Good Gravy platform (which launched as a bone-broth-coated kibble in fall 2024) into a high-moisture format that works as a complete meal or a topper.

The exclusivity window runs two years. That's long enough to build velocity if the SKU works, and long enough to fragment your wet set if it doesn't.

The bet Petcurean made and the one you inherit

The Good Gravy kibble platform launched in fall 2024 and expanded in fall 2025. Petcurean is betting that brand equity, the gravy-forward taste profile, the fresh-ingredient positioning, the Now Fresh name recognition, carries into wet food. The company's Director of Product Management called wet food "a natural next step" and cited Canadian pet parents already feeding across formats: fifty-nine percent kibble, eighteen percent wet, the rest toppers and supplements, according to Euromonitor's 2024 report.

The tradeoff: a format extension is a separate buying decision. And format switching means managing a new category with its own turn rates and space economics. If Petcurean adds "new recipes later this summer," you're managing line expansion before you've proven the core recipes.

Pet Valu's Chief Merchandising Officer said the launch "reflects our shared commitment to innovation" and gives Canadian pet parents "a differentiated wet food offering they can only find at the Pet Valu family of stores." Translation: exclusivity is the competitive moat. For Pet Valu, it's traffic leverage against omnichannel players. For buyers outside the Pet Valu family, it's a brand you can't stock during the exclusivity window.

Walk the decision: does the wet extension earn incremental space or just fragment the brand?

If you already stock Now Fresh kibble and you're inside the Pet Valu family, you're deciding whether Good Gravy Wet earns space in your wet food set.

The case for giving it space: Euromonitor forecasts the Canadian premium wet category will grow thirty-five percent over the next five years. If customers are already buying wet food, this line offers a format option under a brand they may already recognize from kibble. The gravy-forward profile is consistent across formats, which makes the connection easier to communicate. And exclusivity means other retailers can't stock it during the window.

The case for waiting: You're adding SKUs to a category that may already be performing. Wet food has different inventory dynamics than kibble. And if Petcurean adds "new recipes later this summer," you're deciding how much line expansion to accommodate.

The test: give the line a defined trial window in your wet food set. Track whether it's pulling sales from existing wet brands or adding to the category. If it's incremental, it earns the space. If it's substitution, you're deciding whether it outperforms what it replaced.

Our read: exclusivity buys time, but the format question is still open

Petcurean built a platform with Good Gravy kibble. The wet extension is the logical move, the category is growing, mixed feeding is normal, and the brand has a taste story that works across formats. But a format extension asks customers to make a new decision: hydration, variety, convenience, price per feeding. The gravy angle helps, but it's not automatic.

The exclusivity window gives Pet Valu two years to prove the SKU before other retailers can stock it. That's leverage if it works. It's also concentrated risk if it doesn't, the performance data stays inside one retail family, and other buyers can't test it to build their own case.

For buyers outside the Pet Valu family, this is a watch. The exclusivity runs through December 31, 2026. What happens after that depends on how the line performs inside Pet Valu stores.

What changes on the shelf Monday

If you're in the Pet Valu family and you stock Now Fresh kibble, you're deciding whether Good Gravy Wet gets space in your wet food set, and how much. The company said the launch will be supported by national retail marketing, paid media, in-store materials, and digital flyer promotions. Your decision is whether the brand equity and the category growth forecast justify the space.

If you're outside the Pet Valu family, you're watching whether an exclusive wet launch from an established kibble brand delivers during the exclusivity window. The answer tells you whether format extensions are a play worth considering when the window closes.
