Anthropologie Expanded Barbour 200% Year Over Year. Pet Is the Category Test.
The heritage brand skipped pet specialty and went lifestyle-first. That distribution choice is the story.
Anthropologie expanded its Barbour assortment by 200% year over year and added pet to the collaboration for the first time.
The 200% expansion is the real number
Anthropologie brought Barbour onto its floor in May 2025. The brand's signature outerwear sold out consistently enough that Anthropologie expanded the assortment by 200% year over year heading into fall 2026. The expansion includes Barbour's first home collection through Anthropologie, tabletop, textiles, lighting, floor cushions, LED lanterns, and coordinating pet accessories that pair classic Barbour tartans with Anthropologie's florals and playful accents.
The collection launched August 24, 2026 at select Anthropologie stores and online, priced $18 to $674. Five exclusive outerwear styles anchor the assortment. Pet accessories extend the line from home to outdoors, positioned as part of the same lifestyle story rather than a separate impulse category.
What the 200% figure is NOT
This is not a pet brand expanding into lifestyle retail. This is a heritage outerwear brand that Anthropologie's customer already bought entering pet via a lifestyle channel, not pet specialty. Barbour's distribution choice, Anthropologie, not independent pet or big-box pet, shows how a 129-year-old brand with deep countryside credibility thinks about pet channel strategy.
The collection treats pet as a peer category to fashion and home in a major brand collaboration. The Barbour collab tests whether the retailer's customer base will cross-shop pet when the brand story is strong enough, and whether heritage brand equity transfers to the pet shelf.
Pet graduated from impulse aisle to curated lifestyle category the moment Anthropologie made it part of a heritage collaboration.
The distribution tell
Barbour chose Anthropologie over pet specialty for its first pet launch. That decision mirrors the premium apparel playbook: build brand equity in the channel where your core customer already shops, then extend into adjacent categories within that same channel rather than chasing a different retail format.
For independent pet retailers, the question is whether this opens the door to similar lifestyle brand partnerships, or whether it pulls premium pet buyers toward non-pet channels. If a customer walks into your store looking for the kind of story Anthropologie tells, heritage, craftsmanship, pieces made to be lived in and loved over time, and you stock only pet-native brands, you're competing for the same premium customer without the brand relationships a lifestyle retailer already has.
If you stock premium pet accessories, beds, blankets, bowls, outerwear, and your pitch is quality and design, Anthropologie just became a competitor you didn't have six months ago. The customer who would have bought a $90 dog blanket from you can now buy a Barbour tartan throw blanket and matching pet accessory from Anthropologie, and the brand story she's buying is older and deeper than most pet-native lines can claim.
The counter-move: stock lifestyle-first pet brands that can tell a comparable story, or build partnerships with heritage brands before a lifestyle retailer does. Anthropologie's willingness to co-develop pet product with a non-pet brand suggests an opening for lifestyle-first pet brands to pitch non-pet specialty accounts, but it also means those brands may skip pet specialty entirely if the lifestyle channel pays better.
The risk in betting against this: if Anthropologie's Barbour pet accessories sell through at the rate the outerwear did, other lifestyle retailers will add pet to their next heritage collaboration, and premium pet becomes a category lifestyle retailers treat as core rather than novelty. If that happens, the independent pet retailer who built margin on premium design loses the customer to a channel that was never in the comp set before.
