On the ShelfBy The PetRetailNews Desk3 min readAugust 12, 2026
Polkadog's New CEO Came Out of a PetSmart Subsidiary. Read the Timing.
A beloved Boston brand brings in an operator who scaled a natural pet brand inside PetSmart for over a decade. The hire itself is the story.
Polkadog announced in August that Jay Pusey will serve as chief executive officer. Pusey spent 18 years in the pet industry, including over ten years at Only Natural Pet, which PetSmart owns outright, where he ran marketing, commerce, and merchandising during a growth period the company described as significant.
Polkadog started in Boston in 2002 as a neighborhood pet shop and built a reputation for quality treats and a loyal customer base. TAW Ventures bought the company earlier this year. Pusey started August 10.
Before joining Only Natural Pet, Pusey worked at Pet360, PetMD, and PetFoodDirect when digital commerce in the pet category was still taking shape. He earned an MBA from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland and a bachelor's degree from Elon University in business and economics. He also completed service in the Peace Corps in Ukraine. Pusey and his family are relocating from Colorado to Massachusetts this month.
The hire follows the acquisition
TAW Ventures closed its acquisition of Polkadog earlier this year. The company announced Pusey's appointment in August.
According to the announcement, Pusey said his initial focus will be understanding the foundation the company has already established. Jane Lauder, who founded and manages TAW Ventures, said in a statement that Pusey grasps what sets Polkadog apart: its people, products, customers, and the community the brand has created.
The company said Pusey plans to spend his initial months visiting with staff, customers, and retail partners while collaborating with the team on long-term strategy.

What the resume signals about the next phase
Pusey's background centers on commerce, merchandising, and marketing, the three areas that drive distribution expansion.
Only Natural Pet operates as a PetSmart subsidiary. Leading marketing, commerce, and merchandising there for over a decade means Pusey has experience running a brand within a large parent company's infrastructure while keeping the brand's identity separate.
That combination of skills is specific, and it is what Polkadog just brought in.
For the store owner: If Polkadog changes how it distributes, consider how that affects your positioning. The brand's reputation for quality and community is what supports the shelf space and margin you allocate. Whether those attributes stay consistent as the company grows is what matters.
For the buyer: Polkadog has not announced new channels, but the CEO appointment suggests growth planning is underway. If you carry Polkadog now, ask your rep in the next quarter what the distribution strategy looks like going forward and whether service levels will change.
For the brand operator: If you run a direct-to-consumer or small-batch brand and are deciding when to hire outside leadership, the timing here is instructive: immediately after the acquisition, ahead of the growth phase.
Our read: the hire is about building capacity before expansion
According to the company, Polkadog is working to expand its reach, strengthen retailer relationships, and invest in product development while preserving what has characterized the brand from the start: its quality, authenticity, and community focus.
That is the stated plan. Whether it succeeds depends on whether Pusey can grow distribution without damaging what made the brand worth stocking initially: the quality, the origin story, and the customer loyalty that comes from feeling connected to a neighborhood business, even when the scale changes.
What we are watching: where Polkadog appears next, and whether the brand that arrives on new shelves matches the one that built its following in Boston.
