You're walking the New Product Showcase floor at PATS, September 27, 2026, NEC Birmingham. A brand rep hands you a card with a gold seal on it: winner, Grooming Products category. That trophy used to move the first order. Now you're asking about margin, reorder velocity, and whether they're undercutting you on their own site before you write the PO.

Entries just opened, and the program looks the same

PATS 2026 New Product Showcase and Awards entries are officially open. Exhibitors can enter their latest product launches into the program, and the show is expected to feature a record number of entries from across the pet and aquatics industry. Leopard Co is sponsoring, PBW News is the media partner, and the Showcase gives buyers a single location to see what's launching. Every product entered automatically goes into the Awards judging, which happens on the opening morning by an independent panel of leading pet retailers. Winners get announced at the Exhibitor Drinks Reception on day one and promoted through the rest of the event.

This year's Awards feature 12 categories. WildWash won Grooming Products in 2025 with its 5 in 1 Magic Mud for Dogs & Cats. Co-founder Jane Cooper said winning "opened up conversations with new stockists and partners looking for proven, standout products."

The structure is the same. What changed is what happens after the trophy.

The thing the award used to do

An award at a trade show used to be a buying signal. The retailer panel vetted it, the brand won visibility, and the buyer took that as proof the product would move. The award compressed the trust-building step.

That still works for some products. WildWash said the trophy opened stockist conversations. But the award gets you the meeting. What converts the meeting into a PO is the same thing it always was: margin that works, a reorder cycle you can predict, and proof the brand isn't training your customer on specialty product then closing the sale on their own site at a lower price.

What buyers are actually vetting now

The award tells you a panel of retailers thought the product was interesting on launch morning. It does not tell you:

  • Whether the product's margin structure works for your store's payment terms and inventory reality.
  • Whether customers who buy it once come back for it.
  • Whether the brand is running promotions on their own site that undercut your retail price.
  • Whether the SKU solves a real merchandising problem on your shelf or photographs well at a booth.

Buyers are asking versions of those questions earlier in the conversation now. The award gets the product in front of you. The answers to those questions decide whether it stays on your shelf.

The decision this creates if you're entering

If you're a brand entering the PATS Awards, the trophy is not the asset. The visibility window is the asset, and you waste it if you treat the award as launch PR instead of a retail sales tool.

The buyers walking the Showcase floor in September are deciding what to stock and when to reorder. They will ask about margin, velocity, and DTC policy. If your answer to any of those is "we're still figuring that out," the award does not save the conversation. Have the margin structure ready, have early sell-through data if you launched anywhere else first, and have a clear DTC policy you can state in one sentence. The award puts you in the room. Those three answers keep you there.

What this means if you're booking meetings based on award buzz

If you're a buyer using the Awards as a filter for which brands to meet with, add a second filter: ask what problem the product solves on your shelf before you book the meeting. "Award winner" and "innovative" are not merchandising problems. "I need a grooming SKU at a specific price point that doesn't require refrigeration" is a merchandising problem. "I need a treat format that takes up less linear footage" is a merchandising problem. The award tells you the product is new. Your criteria tell you whether it's useful.

PATS runs September 27-29, 2026, at NEC Birmingham. Entries are open now. The judging happens opening morning, winners announced day one. The reorder decision happens when you know whether the customer came back for it.
